Grabungskampagne 2010<\/strong>
\nMit der dritten und letzten Grabungsetappe am Drapham Dzong in Bhutan wurde die erste Phase des \u00abBhutan-Swiss Archaeology Project\u00bb abgeschlossen. Die Grabungen hatten zum Ziel, in den bisher noch unber\u00fchrten Partien der Hauptburg den Mauerbestand zu erfassen und ganz allgemein die baugeschichtlichen Zusammenh\u00e4nge und Abfolgen des Burgenbaus herauszufinden. Um diese Ziele zu erreichen, musste man grosse Mengen von Mauerschutt abtragen, bevor in den unteren Siedlungsschichten die arch\u00e4ologische Feinarbeit beginnen konnte. Die Befunde erwiesen sich als \u00fcberaus reichhaltig. Es ist gelungen, den Zugang im S\u00fcdbereich des Areals, den Vorplatz des Hauptturmes mit einer repr\u00e4sentativen Eingangstreppe sowie die wehrhafte Umfassungsmauer auf ihrer ganzen L\u00e4nge freizulegen. Nunmehr steht ebenfalls fest, dass am Drapham Dzong nur eine Besiedelungsperiode vorliegt, die ins 16.\/17. Jahrhundert geh\u00f6rt, dass die Baugeschichte aber zwei Phasen umfasst und die ganze Anlage vor 1700 gewaltsam untergegangen war, wobei der Hauptturm durch Feuer zerst\u00f6rt worden war.<\/p>\n

Da ausserhalb der Umfassungsmauer mehrere M\u00fclldeponien zum Vorschein gekommen sind, liegt auch ein ansehnlicher Komplex an Kleinfunden vor. Diese setzen sich vorwiegend aus Tierknochen und lokaler Keramik zusammen. Sp\u00e4rlicher vertreten sind die Metallobjekte, unter denen eiserne Pfeilspitzen und Musketenkugeln aus Blei zu erw\u00e4hnen sind. Besonderes Interesse verdienen die Fragmente chinesischen Porzellans. Die Auswertung dieses Fundgutes bildet zusammen mit den Ergebnissen der Laboruntersuchungen an diversen Erd-, Gesteins- und Pflanzenproben und mit den Informationen der Grabungsdokumentation die Grundlage f\u00fcr einen ausf\u00fchrlichen Forschungsbericht, der bis 2013 fertig gestellt werden soll.<\/p>\n

Im Sommer 2010 veranstaltete das Museum Rietberg Z\u00fcrich eine grosse Bhutan-Ausstellung und stellte dabei in einem separaten Raum das \u00abBhutan-Swiss Archaeology Project\u00bb vor. Gezeigt wurden nebst Fotos, Pl\u00e4nen, Zeichnungen und einem kurzen Film von der Grabung auch einige arch\u00e4ologische Funde und Ger\u00e4te. Ebenfalls pr\u00e4sentiert wurden die photogrammetrischen Dokumente des Teams der ETH Z\u00fcrich, die mittels Drohne Aufnahmen des Grabungsgel\u00e4ndes gemacht hatten. Dieser kleine Modellhelikopter wurde auch an der Ausstellung gezeigt.<\/p>\n

Ende M\u00e4rz 2011 ist die zweite Phase des von der SLSA finanzierten und von Helvetas koordinierten Gesamtprojekts eingeleitet worden. Dabei geht es um eine Institutionalisierung der Arch\u00e4ologie in Bhutan. Bereits 2010 hat in diesem Rahmen ein junger bhutanischer Ingenieur, Sonam Dorji, ein viermonatiges Praktikum als arch\u00e4ologischer Ingenieur in der Schweiz absolviert. Die Familien-Vontobel-Stiftung hat der SLSA zu diesem Zweck eine Spende von 12’000 CHF \u00fcberwiesen. 2009<\/strong>
\nIm Oktober und November 2009 wurde die zweite von insgesamt drei Grabungsetappen an der Burgruine Drapham Dzong im Rahmen des \u00abBhutan-Swiss Archaeology Projects\u00bb durchgef\u00fchrt. Parallel zu den Grabungen f\u00fchrte ein selbstst\u00e4ndig arbeitendes Team des Institutes f\u00fcr Fotogrammetrie und Geod\u00e4sie der ETH Z\u00fcrich unter der Leitung von Prof. Armin Gr\u00fcn mittels Flugdrohne topografische Aufnahmen des Burggel\u00e4ndes durch. Mit den dabei erfassten Daten wird das Team ein 3-D-Modell der Burganlage erstellen, das zun\u00e4chst an einer grossen Bhutan-Ausstellung im Museum Rietberg im Sommer 2010 zu sehen sein wird. Die Materialien (Videofilm, Fotos, Modell) sollen anschliessend auch in Thimpu gezeigt und dem bhutanischen Kulturdepartement zur Verf\u00fcgung gestellt werden, damit sie eventuell abschliessend beim Drapham Dzong der lokalen Bev\u00f6lkerung zug\u00e4nglich gemacht werden k\u00f6nnen.<\/p>\n

Die eigentlichen Grabungsarbeiten unter der Leitung von Prof. Werner Meyer, Universit\u00e4t Basel, dauerten insgesamt sechs Wochen. Sie verliefen ohne Zwischenf\u00e4lle und waren vom Wetter mehrheitlich beg\u00fcnstigt. Das Team bestand aus f\u00fcnf wissenschaftlichen Fachkr\u00e4ften aus der Schweiz, vier Assistenten aus Bhutan, einem Schweizer Arzt und 25 bis 50 Arbeitern und Arbeiterinnen aus der Umgebung. F\u00fcr die Organisation und Logistik vor Ort waren die \u00abDivision of Conservation of Heritage Sites under the Department of Culture\u00bb und die Helvetas Bhutan zust\u00e4ndig.<\/p>\n

Gest\u00fctzt auf die Erfahrungen von 2008, wurde der grossfl\u00e4chige Abbau der vom zerfallenen Mauerwerk stammenden Schuttmassen geplant. Dadurch sollten m\u00f6glichst weite Teile des im Boden steckenden Grundrisses der Oberburg freigelegt werden. Die Arbeiten konzentrierten sich auf den Hauptturm (utse) und dessen Annexe, auf den Westtrakt sowie auf die s\u00fcdliche Peripherie, wo zwei hintereinandergestaffelte Toranlagen nachgewiesen wurden.<\/p>\n

Die s\u00fcdliche und westliche Umfassungsmauer der Oberburg konnte auf der Aussenseite mitsamt den beiden Flankierungst\u00fcrmen auf der ganzen L\u00e4nge bis zu dem zun\u00e4chst f\u00fcnf Meter tief im Schutt steckenden Fundamentbereich freigelegt werden. Im S\u00fcdwestabschnitt des Oberburgareals, wo sich ebenfalls m\u00e4chtige Schuttberge t\u00fcrmten, kamen verschiedene Mauerz\u00fcge zum Vorschein, deren architektonische Zusammenh\u00e4nge noch gekl\u00e4rt werden m\u00fcssen.<\/p>\n

Insgesamt sind 2009 \u00fcber 3500 Kubikmeter Mauerschutt abgetragen worden. F\u00fcr die guten Mauersteine wurden zwecks Wiederverwendung bei der Konservierung an geeigneten Pl\u00e4tzen Depots angelegt. Schwierigkeiten bereitete das Abtragen des Schuttes im Innern des Hauptturmes, weil sich hier das Mauerwerk wegen einer Brandkatastrophe in einem so schlechten Zustand befand, dass provisorische Sicherungsvorkehrungen in Form von Holzverstrebungen unvermeidbar wurden. Unter dem Sekund\u00e4r- und Prim\u00e4rschutt liegen interessante hum\u00f6se, fundhaltige Siedlungsschichten von 2 bis 15 cm Dicke. Diese sind noch nicht abgebaut worden.<\/p>\n

Im Gegensatz zur ersten Grabungsetappe, die nur wenig Kleinfundmaterial geliefert hatte, sind 2009 zahlreiche Objekte zum Vorschein gekommen. Sie stammen aus den hum\u00f6sen Siedlungsablagerungen unterhalb des Prim\u00e4rschuttes und umfassen Tierknochen, wenige Metallfragmente und viel Keramik von unterschiedlicher Qualit\u00e4t und Form. Als besonders wichtig ist das Auftreten von Eisenschlacke hervorzuheben. Alle Funde werden in der Schweiz analysiert und weiterbearbeitet.<\/p>\n

Im Laufe des Sommers 2010 d\u00fcrften die meisten Ergebnisse der diversen Laboruntersuchungen vorliegen. Dann wird sich zeigen, welche neuen Erkenntnisse die Grabungs-etappe von 2009 erbracht hat. Besonders gespannt darf man auf die Radiokarbondaten, die Metall- und Schlackenanalysen und die Bestimmung der Tierknochen sein.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” \nDie Grabungsperiode begann am 15. Oktober 2008 mit einer buddhistischen Zeremonie. Die Gesamtanlage besteht topografisch aus zwei Teilen, einer Bergfestung und einer (ebenfalls befestigten?) Talsiedlung. Die Bergfestung wiederum gliedert sich in drei Stufen, in eine Hauptburg auf der Bergkuppe und je eine s\u00fcdlich und n\u00f6rdlich vorgelagerte, tiefer gelegene Vorburg. Die Bergfestung umfasst in ihren \u00e4usseren Teilen fortifikatorisch starke Elemente (Viereckt\u00fcrme mit Schiess\u00f6ffnungen, Umfassungsmauern, Verbindungsg\u00e4nge).<\/p>\n

Die ganzen baugeschichtlichen und funktionellen Zusammenh\u00e4nge k\u00f6nnten nur durch eine breit angelegte Fl\u00e4chengrabung ermittelt werden. Die Grabung der ersten Phase (2008) beschr\u00e4nkte sich auf die Hauptburg auf dem Kamm des H\u00fcgels. Es handelt sich beim Drapham Dzong um eine sehr bedeutende Wehranlage, deren Erbauung und Zerst\u00f6rung in einen noch zu bestimmenden historischen Kontext von gr\u00f6sseren Dimensionen einzuordnen ist. Schl\u00fcssige \u00dcberlegungen k\u00f6nnen erst angestellt werden, wenn beispielsweise die Radiokarbondaten vorliegen. Dass grosse Teile der Anlage einem Brand zum Opfer gefallen sind, steht aufgrund des Grabungsbefundes fest. Offen bleiben indessen die Ursachen dieser Brandkatastrophe. Die d\u00fcnnen Siedlungsschichten lassen eine eher kurze Ben\u00fctzungszeit vermuten. Einzelne Architekturelemente (z. B. Schiess\u00f6ffnungen, vorgeschobene T\u00fcrme, konisch nach oben verj\u00fcngte T\u00fcr- und Fenster\u00f6ffnungen) finden Entsprechungen in erhaltenen Dzongs und anderen Wehrbauten aus dem fr\u00fchen 17. Jahrhundert; f\u00fcr die Anlage als Ganzes fehlen vorl\u00e4ufig Vergleichsbeispiele. Die Grabung endete am 5. Dezember mit den Vorbereitungen f\u00fcr den Besuch des Premierministers.<\/p>\n

Kurzbericht der Vorbereitungsarbeiten 2007 am Drapham Dzong in Bhutan
\nIn Bhutan begann ein neues SLSA-Projekt mit dem Besuch einer Schweizer Delegation, die im Oktober\/November 2007 f\u00fcr acht Tage in Bhutan weilte. Prof. emeritus Werner Meyer (Universit\u00e4t Basel), der SLSA-Generalsekret\u00e4r Dr. Eberhard Fischer und Dr. Jorrit Britschgi (Museum Rietberg Z\u00fcrich) trafen sich mit Vertretern der Regierung von Bhutan und der Helvetas Schweiz in Thimpu. Dabei wurde die Zusammenarbeit beim Aufbau eines arch\u00e4ologischen Dienstes im K\u00f6nigreich Bhutan vereinbart.<\/p>\n

Eine erste Prospektion der Festigungsanlage Drapham Dzong in Zentralbhutan brachte bereits erste Befunde zu Tage. Die Burganlage, die gem\u00e4ss m\u00fcndlicher \u00dcberlieferung aus dem 15.\/16. Jahrhundert stammen d\u00fcrfte, erstreckt sich \u00fcber mehrere hundert Quadratmeter auf einer H\u00fcgelkuppe und weist Festungsmauern, eine relativ gut erhaltene Zentralburg und mehrere flankierende Schutzt\u00fcrme auf. An mindestens drei Seiten entlang des H\u00fcgelzuges liessen sich ferner ummauerte Zugangswege zu der Kernburg ausmachen. Am Fuss des H\u00fcgels stiess das Team auf weitere Befestigungsanlagen, die Ruine einer M\u00fchle und grosse Geb\u00e4udereste, deren Funktion noch ungekl\u00e4rt ist.<\/p>\n

Auf der Grundlage der im Herbst 2007 vorgenommenen Sondierungsarbeiten baut nun die Planung der ersten grossen Feldkampagne im Herbst 2008 auf, die unter der wissenschaftlichen Leitung von Werner Meyer durchgef\u00fchrt werden soll. Die Ausmasse und der logistische Aufwand der Grabungen, die gleichzeitig die Mitarbeiter des Ministeriums einbeziehen, machen es n\u00f6tig, das Projekt auf mehrere Jahre aufzuteilen. Die Kampagne 2008 wird sich deswegen auf die Erforschung des eigentlichen Kernbezirks konzentrieren.<\/p>\n
